Observation of the Earth system: the challenges of observing natural and man-made environments

Understanding the Earth System and its habitability from its distant origins depends on the availability of high-quality, long-term observations open to the entire scientific community and beyond to many stakeholders. Thus, in order to detect early on the sometimes weak signals of the impacts of human activities on natural environments, systematic long-term observation is essential to separate it from natural variability. The collection, qualification and preservation of the quality of in situ data and their traceability are major challenges for the long-term monitoring of environments and the synergy of observations, which are generally heterogeneous in terms of their sources, nature and format, with satellite observations and the various simulation models. For several decades now, the CNRS has been setting up original and coherent observation systems for natural and anthropised environments via the labelling of complementary systems: National Observation Services, workshop zones, men-environment observatories, social and societal surveys, human health cohorts, etc. These observation activities are carried out in strong synergy with international programmes and European research infrastructures, and increasingly integrate the action of stakeholders and sometimes participatory sciences. This conference will take place in a plenary session, after which parallel sessions devoted to different observation issues may be organised. The session will be devoted to general presentations on the challenges of observation and on the use of observation data by the scientific community and other communities interested in research data. The conference will take place at the Gérard Mégie Campus of the CNRS, in the Marie Curie auditorium, within the limits of available places, and by videoconference the 7 and 8 november Registration is free but mandatory (in person and by videoconference) before Friday 21 October 2022.
