GMOS-FR

Global Mercury Observation System
Project websiteData accessOfficial website

The project

The atmospheric mercury compounds monitoring program GMOS-FR has been initiated thanks to the support of the EU FP7 GMOS (Global Mercury Observation System – 2010 to 2015) and the French Polar Institute IPEV (program GMOstral-1028 from 2012, still in progress). GMOS-FR is now also supported by GOS4M (Global Observation for Mercury), a GEO Flagship aimed to support the Minamata Convention on Mercury Secretariat, the UN environment Mercury Fate and Transport partnership and all Nations in the follow up of the Conferences of Parties (COP) related to the Effectiveness Evaluation and Global Monitoring framework. Its main goal is to monitor atmospheric mercury which is a major contaminant of marine food chains and a global pollutant. GMOS-FR site (content, updating) is coordinated by IGE (Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement – Grenoble, FRANCE / PhD O. Magand as PI) with the support of the SEDOO partners.

Observations

The data are transferred to GMOS-FR hosted and supported by AERIS.

There are continuous atmospheric observations at Amsterdam Island in the Indian Ocean (since 2012), at Concordia Station in Antarctica (2012-2021), at Dumont d’Urville Station in Antarctica (2012-2016), at Pic du Midi Observatory (2011-2024), at Chacaltaya in Bolivia (2015-2016) and at Maido Observatory on La Réunion island (2017-2018).

These observations were also supported by LABEX OSUG@2020 (project ORAURE), by CNRS-INSU (projects LEFE SAMOA and TOPMMODEL) and of the component iGOSP-ICUGO (Integrated Global Observing Systems for Persistent Pollutants – Actions in Global Observation System for Mercury) of project ERA-PLANET (The European network for observing our changing planet). All has been possible thanks to the technicians who maintain and fix the instruments on sites (Overwintering technicians VSC and VI and partnership with the University of La Paz and OPAR).
