Objectives of the project

The objective of the ICE-GENESIS project is to better simulate icing phenomena on aircraft. Within the framework of this project, a measurement campaign to study snow using airborne and ground-based measurements was organised at La Chaux-de-Fonds from January to March 2021, where various instruments were installed on the ground, including meteorological radars.

In addition, flights with a scientific aircraft, the ATR 42 SAFIRE , were carried out to measure the microphysical properties of the snow inside the clouds. The comparison of the aircraft’s in-situ measurements with radar measurements taken from the ground should enable scientific knowledge of snow and icing phenomena associated with precipitation in aviation to be enhanced.
